What Is an AI Hallucination?
A hallucination is when an AI model produces information that is false or fabricated but presents it fluently and confidently. Because language models generate statistically likely text rather than retrieving verified facts, they can invent details, citations, or events. Reducing hallucinations — through retrieval, grounding, and verification — is a major focus of current work.
