What Is Symbolic AI?

Symbolic AI — sometimes called “good old-fashioned AI” — holds that intelligence is the manipulation of symbols according to explicit logical rules. Knowledge is written in a formal language and reasoning applies rules to it. Favored by pioneers like John McCarthy, its transparency is a strength, but its brittleness led the field toward data-driven methods.
