What Is a Foundation Model?

A foundation model is a large model trained on broad, general data that can then be adapted — through prompting or fine-tuning — to many specific tasks. Large language models and large multimodal models are examples. The term captures a shift from building one model per task to reusing a single general-purpose base for many applications.
